Tips On Keeping kids Safe Online
Internet opens a world of possibilities with millions of places we can visit to expand our horizons and learn about different cultures and ways of life. Along with it, we will be exposed to dangers online because some people might try to take advantage of your kids. While it is not possible to always monitor your kids 24/7, there are some steps that you can do to safeguard your loved ones.
1. Parent-Child communication is the most important factor for your kids’ online safety. Be a friend, not a bodyguard to your kids. You need to make your kids feel comfortable to talk to you about anything. Spend time with your children online; have them show you about their favorite websites.
2. If your kids use chatting or email programs, talk to them about not to get together with anyone they "met" online. If for whatever reason they have to, then you should come along.
3. Talk to your kids about not to reveal any identities; such as home address, parents' identity, phone number or pictures to those that they "met" online.
4. Know your kids’ friends. Monitor outgoing your kids’ phone calls for any unknown phone number(s). Be sure to know those people that have been talking to your kids.
4. Educate your kids about online sexual predators and other potential online danger.
5. Should your kids receive any messages that are mean or in any way make them feel uncomfortable. Have them let you know right away. As a parent you should report it to both the service provider and the local authorities.
6. Avoid putting the computer in your kid's bedroom. Instead, place it in the Family Room where you can easily keep an eye on. It will be harder for online sex predators to communicate with a potential victim when the computer screen is not discreet.
7. Talk to you kids about not giving any passwords to anyone (including their best friends).
8. Utilize monitoring or parental controls software. Most of internet providers do include this in the service, otherwise consider buying one.
