5 Signs Your Kid Might Be At Risk with Online Sex Predators

Late Night Online Chatting.

Online chat room is the number one medium where online sex offenders spend large amounts of time online. According to Detective Chief Superintendent Keith Akerman (Telegraph.co.uk January 2002), one in five children who use computer chat rooms has been approached over the Internet by pedophiles. Since most Online Sex Predators are actively looking for preys during night time, kids who go online to chat during this time are at the greatest risk. Some parents have told their kids to stay at home after school to prevent any undesirable incidents to happen to them. These kids spend most of their time online talking to their friends or making new friends, and sometimes look for sexually explicit information. There is lots of good parental control software out there such as: WebWatcher, SpectorPro and SpyAgent that parents could utilize, if the internet provider does not already provide them with one.

Pornographic Materials.

Having being kids ourselves, we know that it is the period of time where all those hormones are raging and curiosity is at the highest. Most kids are curious about sex and any pornographic materials would just make matter worse. Pornographic pictures are commonly used by the sexual predators to lure and seduce kids into a sexual discussion. According to a study by National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (National Juvenile Online Victimization Study. Virginia: National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2005), of those who are arrested in the America for the possession of child pornography between 2000 and 2001, over 80% had pictures involving kids between ages 6 and 12; about 40% had pictures involving kids between ages 3 and 5; and about 20% had pictures of toddlers under age 3. It is known that child pornography is being used by sexual predators to show the victim that sexual encounter between a child and an adult is "natural". We recommend that parents monitor the kids’ computer for any pornographic materials. If you are using Microsoft Windows, you can click 'Start' and then mouse over the 'Documents', that will show you a number of files that recently have been opened.

Gifts From Strangers.

Everyone loves getting gifts, including kids. It is a common 'next step' for sexual predators to send photographs and gifts to their potential preys. There also have been incidents where sexual predators sent airline tickets to get the kids to travel to meet them, instead of them coming to the kids. Take notice if you kids suddenly having an expensive gadget or other item on their hands. Find out where and how they get it.

The Unknown Calls.

Nothing excites the sexual predators like talking one-on-one to the potential preys. The sexual predators use this opportunity to gain trust or to get a feel on how their victims behave and react to them. While the meet-up is the ultimate goal, most often first engage in “phone sex” with the potential victims. It is a common strategy among the sexual predators to give out their phone numbers when the victims refuse to give theirs. Parents should monitor their kids’ phone calls for both outgoing and incoming calls. Make sure you know the people who your kids have been in contact with.

Withdrawal from the family.

The online sexual predators aware that the kids are protected by their family and the closer the victims to their family the harder it is going to be for them to be able to seduce their victims. The sexual predators will likely to try to exploit the common parents-kids issues such as exaggerating problems at home and school in order to drive their victims away from their family. It is important to note that kids may also become withdrawn after being abuse sexually. Parents should try to make their kids feel open to talk about their issues.
